How does it work:

How much does it cost to send a questionnaire to 1000 respondents?

It depends on which source you go with:

- if you are using your distribution list (clients, partners, people from your network, friends etc.) it’s included in the subscription or Lifetime Deal (LTD) price, up to a certain limit mentioned in the Pricing page.

- if you need a profiled set of responses from the Brainactive audience, you need to keep in mind that these people are incentivized to respond to your questionnaire: they are paid a certain amount of money for each questionnaire they respond to. So, based on their location (country), and the estimated time it takes them to answer (given by the number of questions), the price per respondent usually lands in the $1-2 range. Your final price will be the what you pay per response (how much it costs per respondent to answer to all your questions) multiplied by the number of responses (how many people you need to answer). You can always clearly see the total price in the your draft, right before you click the "Publish" button.

How do I create a survey?

You have 2 options: either you do it manually, from the scratch, adding questions and option answers one by one, or you can simply brief our AI assistant, Brainy, available on the side at all times, who will generate a professional questionnaire in a few seconds. You can then easily customize it to your liking before moving on to selecting your audience and publishing.

What types of audience can I target?

It depends on your specific purpose, but we cover all corners. You can currently choose between using your own audience (list of clients/partners, fans, social media followers etc.), and each subscription plan includes a number of such responses, or purchase access to consumers from our pool of 300+ million individuals in 135 countries, all profiled on multiple demographics and behavioral criteria, so that you can select exactly those that are most relevant to you. Very soon we will include a 3rd option, that of using your own consumer market research panel or any 3rd party's panel. We will definitely announce once that option is available.

Who are the 300+ million consumers?

We use strict quality and security protocols to determine that each respondent that reaches our surveys is actually a human with a valid identity. In the same process, we also make sure that all the responses we get reflect the unbiased opinion of a real person. Specifically:

- real-time deduplication - based primarily on geo-IP and email address, our systems immediately flag someone who has already attempted to fill out a survey and deny his/her access, so that a questionnaire is always completed by a person one single time

- reCAPTCHA - if someone doesn't pass the test, he/she cannot access the survey, which is how we determine who is a bot and who is a human being- phone number validation

- a phone number provided by respondents in the process of becoming online panel members is always validated via OTP

- email address verification - checking each email address to be sure it is valid is also a part of the basic process of online panel members' recruitment

- speedsters - respondents who fill out a survey 25%+ faster than the median completion time of all respondents get flagged for quality reasons

Do I have to pay extra for accessing the 300+ million consumers?

Yes, accessing the 300+ million consumers is not included in the subscription or Lifetime Deal fees, so there is an extra fee that you need to pay per each response that you choose to get from this source. The reason why is that these consumers are paid for answering surveys, hence we have a direct cost to cover in such cases. However, you can always transparently see this fee in the platform right before you push the "Publish" button, and it's a very affordable fee (typically $1-2/response) for interviewing the exact people that are part of your target group.

Can I run surveys in other language than English?

Sure thing. Currently, our AI assistant can speak to you and build questions in 19 different languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, Italian, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Swedish, Russian, Slovenian, Croatian, and Serbian. We will soon add many more. But, you can already use any language you prefer if you build your questionnaire manually.

How long does it take to get my results?

With help from our AI assistant the questionnaire building, audience selection and publishing takes less than 4 minutes, then results typically start collecting in minutes after you click the Publish button and finish the checkout session. A standard 1,000-response survey on a targeted audience with a regular profile in terms of complexity (individuals 18+, general population) will most likely finish in 1-2 hours from launching. Then, you can simply download your results in your preferred format, including a basic set of conclusions that will help with fine-tuning your business decisions: csv, SPSS, or PDF.

Can I still edit the questions after survey is published?

Currently, once a survey is published, it cannot be edited anymore. But you can always stop the field (collecting answers from respondents) by pausing the survey - you would only pay for the answers completed before the survey was stopped. Then you can easily create a new study with the desired modifications and continue fieldwork.

Is there a limit on the number of questions that I can have in a questionnaire?

The Free and Plus plans have a limit on the number of questions, as they are intended for occasional users running surveys of less complexity; on all other plans there is no such limit, however we strongly recommend to always use up to 50 questions in a survey, so that respondents can maintain a keen focus on their meaning and answer accordingly.

Can I use my own audience and/or other online panel in Brainactive?

Absolutely! We designed the platform to cover any scenario. When you want to use your own audience (list of email address, social media followers, etc.) or perhaps other online panel, simply create a survey draft without an audience, publish it, and you will instantly have the survey link generated. Then, copy that survey link and place it wherever you need, perhaps in your own panel platform, email it to your list, or post it in social media. The responses will all be visible in your Brainactive account and you can simply download a report once you have the desired number of responses.

Can I include images/videos in survey questions?

Yes, you can easily add images/videos in your questions and test them with respondents. Please always make sure they are not offensive or are of certain prohibited content (vulgar, obscene, promoting hate or violence, among others).

Is there a limit on the number of questions that I can have in a questionnaire?

Do the responses included in the subscription plans and Lifetime Deals (LTDs) expire/accumulate if not used?

The responses included in the subscription plans and Lifetime Deals (LTDs) do not expire or accumulate if not used. For instance, if you have a set number of responses per month and you do not use any of them in a month, they do not accumulate and get passed on to next month.

Can I buy extra responses if I reach the response limit, as stated in the subscription plans and Lifetime Deals (LTDs)?

How do I move the position of the questions?

Simply drag them up and down, or ask AI to do it for you.

I'm not happy with the questions AI generated, how do I edit them?

Although we've trained our AI to be very comprehensive and knowledgeable about market research, when that happens you can either directly edit the questions yourself by clicking on the text that you want changed, or ask AI to redo it pinpointing the very aspect you need to be changed: perhaps the questions' text is not to the point, answer options are insufficient or vague, or other reasons.

The AI generated only a handful of questions, I need many more. What do I do?

It's possible for the AI to generate a too smaller number of questions that you might expect. When that happens, simply ask AI to generate more questions, and ideally mention the number of extra questions too.

The AI seems to have made an error. Why?

It rarely happens, but the AI indeed can provide information that might not be fully accurate. It's recommended for you to double check what AI generates and perform the corrections manually. We use a LLM that learns fast and improves even faster, and we are confident it will improve tremendously in the years to come, but - at the moment - it may have shortcomings.

I was in the middle of the conversation with the AI and it simply froze/gave me an error message. What do I do?

In very rare occasions, the AI may run into temporary glitches - when it happens, please simply refresh the page or ask the AI to perform the same task before it froze/gave you the error. It should work perfectly the 2nd time. If that still doesn't fix it, please chat with us or email us at support@brainactive.ai and a representative will shortly get in touch with you.

How can I be sure real people are answering my questions?

- phone number validation - a phone number provided by respondents in the process of becoming online panel members is always validated via OTP

- email address verification - checking each email address to be sure it is valid is also a part of the basic process of online panel members' recruitment

- speeders - someone who completes a survey in 75% or less the median time of all respondents gets automatically flagged as not paying sufficient attention to questions, hence his/her responses are unreliable

- straightliners - a respondent who repeatedly uses the same patters in answering to questions, such as marking the same column or row in a matrix-type question, is also flagged on the spot and his/her responses removed for quality reasons (also not paying attention to questions)

- bad responses to open-ended questions - answers that respondents type in as a text are automatically verified for accuracy, to be on topic with the question, and to spot the usage of profanity, racist comments, punctuation instead of words, etc.; the answers that do not pass this check are not valid and respondents who give them are typically purged from online panels

- inconsistency - different answers to similar questions in the same questionnaire are usually invalidated, because it's considered that the respondent failed the attention test.

Brainactive is constantly on the lookout to add extra quality thresholds or tests to ensure that only unbiased opinions from actual people end up in the final results of any survey.

Can I know the names of the people who answer my surveys?

As per the current international market research regulations stipulated in the ESOMAR's code of conduct, each response to a survey question must be given in complete anonymity to ensure the quality and accuracy of data, and to respect the personal privacy of individuals who agree to be respondents. Market research focuses on the opinions and preferences of individuals expressed in an uninfluenced and unconstrained circumstance, not on the actual identity of the individuals. Therefore, companies who adhere to industry standards, Brainactive included, are not allowed to ask the name of a respondent, his/her physical address, or any other elements that can identify someone (also known as Personal Identifiable Information or PII) without obtaining that person's written consent in advance. As such, we will only be able to honor such requests only when there is a specific solid reason, for instance in a survey of product test/iHUT type, where respondents must receive a physical product at home to test and return after usage. In such case, we'd need to collect PII with respondent's consent in order to collect the full name and physical address, without which the survey would not be possible to happen.

How were the respondents recruited?

Members of online panels are typically recruited using one of the following methods or a mix of them: targeted online ads in search engines and social media, direct email campaigns, invitations, referrals, and marketing affiliate networks. We only use online panels recruited via a variety of channels in order to ensure a rich diversity of opinions that accurately reflect the reality of the offline world.

How reliable are the answers that I receive?

The responses reflect the unbiased opinion of actual people, and we make sure of that by actively employing a set of identity validation and quality checks - as follows:

Currently, our working hours coverage is 7 AM - 7 PM GMT / 11 PM - 11 AM PST / 2 AM - 2 PM EST, from Monday to Friday, except legal holidays; we plan to expand that to 24/7 before the end of 2024.

How can I contact support?

What's your refund policy?

We take decisions on a case by case basis, taking the underlying reason into account. There can be three cases:

- if it's a refund requested as a result of receiving responses which you consider of sub-par quality, simply email a list of such responses to us at contact@brainactive.ai together with a brief explanation as to why they are of low quality (i.e. completed survey too fast, used profanity etc.); we will reply with a decision within the next business day, and we usually accept such requests.

- if it's about refunding the price paid on a subscription, we usually don't accept such requests, but we can make exceptions if circumstances ask for them.

- If it's about refunding the price paid on audience purchased in the platform, unfortunately we are unable to accept such requests, as we are liable to pay the audience further to our suppliers.

We always try to be as accommodating as possible, however kindly note that it is Brainactive's decision whether or not to accept any refund request.

Accepted refunds are processed by our Finance department within the next 2 business days, in which time our representative will confirm the payment details with you, and the money will reach your account within the next 5-7 days.

What is an online survey?

It's a data collection method that involves gathering responses from individuals part of a target audience based on a set of questions laid out in an organized manner, also known as a questionnaire, and it's used in the quantitative methods of primary market research. On the other hand, there is secondary market research, which means searching and compiling information that already exists in other sources, such as newspapers, magazines, archives, the internet etc.

What's a questionnaire?

It is a set of questions arranged in an organized manner that researchers use to collect responses from individuals who are part of a target audience. It is used in the quantitative methods of primary market research. For the qualitative methods of primary market research (focus groups, communities, 1-to-1 interviews etc.) a discussion guideline is used instead of a questionnaire.

What's a screening question?

It's a type of question usually placed at the beginning on a questionnaire with the purpose of making sure respondents match the desired profile in that survey. For instance, if you want to check which brand of coffee is most enjoyed in Italy and why, you'd likely want to speak to people who are regular consumers of coffee. Otherwise, the respondents from people who don't drink coffee would be irrelevant for that purpose. To make sure that only regular coffee drinkers answer your questions, you need to enter a question that asks about their coffee drinking habits at the beginning of the questionnaire: whoever passes that gets to see and answer the rest of the questions, otherwise they would be thanked and disqualified. That is how you ensure you're speaking to relevant people in each case.

What is an audience?

In market research, an audience is made of the people who answer the questions in your survey. Generally speaking, they are part of your target group, those who you plan on selling your product/service to. They are defined based on basic socio-demographic attributes (such as age, sex, location, income, marital status, employment) or on more advanced criteria (hobbies, job Title, industry, spending habits, technologies used etc., and pretty much any information they are willing to share).

What is a quota?

Quotas are caps set on the number of responses usually based on demographics such as age, gender, region, or income. In order for survey results to be extrapolated to a larger segment (universe), such as the total population of a country, researchers set quotas in the form of percentages or number caps on various demographics ranges (i.e. for age 18-24 yo: 20%, 25-34 yo: 30%, 35-44 yo: 33%, 45-64 yo: 17%) to make sure that the distribution of respondents that will be achieved in that survey matches the actual distribution of the total population. That is how they know the results of a survey with 1000 answers, for instance, are valid for the entire universe that sample is part of.

Instead of the total population, the larger segment can be anything, for instance it can be pet owners. The distribution of pet owners is typically different in terms of age, gender and region compared to the distribution of the entire population of a country. Hence, a survey ordered by a company in the pet food business would need to set quotas on said demographics in order for the results to be valid for the entire universe of pet owners.

What is a census representative distribution of responses?

A census representative distribution, also known in market research as a national representative sample, is a way of ensuring that the responses received in a survey can be extrapolated to the entire population of a country. To do that, the researchers sets number caps (quotas) on various demographics ranges, for instance on age it would look like this: 18-24 yo: 25%, 25-34 yo: 30%, 35-44 yo: 25%, 45-64 yo: 20%. These percentages are identical with the ones obtained in the most recent census conducted in that country. Thus, the distribution of the respondents match the one of the entire population of the country, which is a prerequisite to have survey responses valid for the entire country.

What is the questionnaire logic?

There are 2 types of logic used in professional market research surveys: skipping and piping. Skipping means redirecting a respondent to a certain question based on the answer selected, so that you can choose which respondents see which questions. For instance, assuming you are running a survey for Tesla and you would like to ask an extra set of in-depth questions to those who either drive or know Tesla, you can easily redirect respondents that click on "Tesla" to the said extra questions, while all those who don't click on "Tesla" get to skip to the questions that do not include references to Tesla.

Piping means copying an answer given to a previous question on to the text of a future question; it's used to also help you build questions that make more sense to respondents when you need to go into more details and thus help you get higher quality answers.
